Membership with Dietitians of Canada

A Message from U of G’s Student Rep.

Hello AHN!

Before you continue reading, please let me take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Shelbi Link and I am your Dietitians of Canada Student Representative) (as well as your 4th Year rep)!  Personally, I have been a member of Dietitians of Canada for the past year, and highly advise everyone to join the student network as well.  They do an excellent job keeping you up to date with ongoing research, nutritional events in your area, publications worth reading and conferences that are aimed toward nutrition students and professors alike!  Please consider joining the network and becoming involved with the Dietitians of Canada - it'll be the best $100.00 you spend all year!  If you have any questions or concerns, PLEASE do not hesitate to contact me at slink@mail.uoguelph.ca!

As students of AHN, you are able to obtain qualifying membership to DC for a discounted fee. DC membership is a great networking tool and information source. Memberships expire and need to be renewed at the end of every March. You can find more information at the following website: http://www.dietitians.ca/About-Us/Become-A-Member.aspx

DC membership... a key ingredient to becoming a better dietitian

You get Recognition - Dietitians of Canada has earned a reputation with national and provincial decision makers and leading health organizations as the voice of dietitians on health issues. Being a member of DC and participating in the Student Network gives you recognition and credibility. Plus you have access to awards and bursaries and the opportunity to showcase your research project at the annual DC conference. "A membership like this is priceless ..." says Denae Lamontagne, 2009-10 DC Student Network Co-chair. Your DC membership includes membership in the Student Network.

You get Networking and Learning Opportunities at big Student Discounts. Claude LeBlanc explains..... "For the price of one of my textbooks, I get more than just great discounts, quality evidence-based updated information and volunteer opportunities; I get the chance to communicate with people all across the country that have the same passion I do. These professionals are living the career that I see ahead of me. It has been my experience that these future colleagues welcome students with open arms. None of my textbooks can offer me that feeling of being part of a community."You can hear what some of DC's member leaders have to say about their career as a dietitian - click on ‘Dietitians tell their stories' at http://www.dietitians.ca/
DC qualifying members receive the student rate for all DC professional development events including the annual DC Conference and online learning courses and Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition (PEN) -http://www.pennutrition.com/index.aspx

You get access to Jobs and Other Opportunities Only DC members have access to the online job database. We know there is no better way to get a job than to network and DC offers face-to-face opportunities and online access to other DC members though ‘Find a Member'. You can search for members in your location with your areas of interest or find a mentor. Only members receive a complimentary copy of the quarterly Journal with free online access plus the monthly member newsletter and Practice - a quarterly publication exploring practice issues. DC student submissions are welcomed. Kathy Berena, 2008 Dietetic Intern, took advantage of this opportunity and shared her Arctic adventure as an intern in Inuvik. You can read her story when you join. Back issues are available online. A Practice Blog is coming soon!
